Focus:

Integrate school-based CHWs to support students and their families.

About:

The KanAWARE project was formed to address escalating student behavioral health needs in the southeast Kansas corridor–eleven counties representing Kansas’ communities most at-risk for poverty, violence, trauma, substance use, and mental health concerns. This program involves many partners across the state of Kansas including Kansas Department of Education, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, Four County Mental Health, University of Kansas Medical Center, Coffeyville Schools, Fort Scott Schools, Pittsburg Schools, and Greenbush Interlocal.

Funding:

This program is funded by SAMHSA through the Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) Grant # H79SM086348.

Components:

Clinical services across specialties (e.g., psychology, psychiatry, developmental medicine, applied behavior)

Focus on the social determinants of health

Statewide workforce capacity-building/ professional development training with telementoring

Goals:

  • To strengthen partnerships across key school-based behavioral health stakeholders in southeast Kansas. 
  • Increase the number of students served across each of the three tiers of the public health pyramid.
  • Develop, implement, & continuously improve KanAWARE’s multi-system referral pathways to advance services across all tiers.
  • Advance a professional community of learning that advances capacity building and an effective workforce across youth-serving systems
  • Build a family community of learning that meets needs related to child behavioral health & social determinants of health.
